Holiday Shores- Spells mp3

I've enjoyed the music of the Holiday Shores for a while now. Their first album, Columbus'd The Whim was my go to when ever I would take a shower. It also moonlights as a great record to put on while driving long distances. The album was one of my faves this time last year, and now Holiday Shores have thrown out a great track as a tasty sample of what is to come. A really enjoyable track that figures to be a good summer song with its whirling sounds from a variety of instruments.

Blouses- Shadow

I have been jiving on Blouse for a while now, and this new track may be their best yet. Really just top notch stuff. It reminds me of one of those great songs I subconsciously know by heart from it's constant radio play in my formative years in the early nineties. I couldn't remember one word until the beat starts, then I can sing off the entire song, pulling from some seldom used part of my brain. Everyone's trying to throwback retro in one way or another nowadays, but Blouse is one of the vintage 1991 bands that is doing it really well.

Blood Diamond- Grins mp3

I'm really digging this song. I'm not sure if Blood Diamond used a sample for the female vocal track, or if that was recorded, but it sounds too good. The sweeping, flowing beats and synths perfectly compliment the gorgeous, girl of your dreams vocals.

Blood Diamonds- Grin

No Dice Paradise- Video

Check out this insanely intimate video of No Dice Paradise preforming the song Guerre-River Hymnal. This is pretty incredible. With just a voice and a couple pedals this guy creates a soaring, epically good song that I personally thoroughly enjoyed. Watch the Video. You will not be disappointed

Chelsea Wolfe mp3

Not gonna lie, at first this song scared me. At first it scared me a lot. The opening makes me think of an epic apocalyptic wasteland. A rogue motorcycle gang led by a man with one eye terrorize the few remaining human survivors. Humanity has become a dark, brittle shell of what it once was. One man is willing to stand up against what he sees as wrong. His past is a mystery, and no one knows much about him, except that he is willing to stand up for what he believes. This song is what plays when that guy walks up.

Sunburn Mix

With the onset of my summer job, working kid's sailing camps, and the unhealthy amount of sun I have, and will be experiencing this summer, I have created a mix to honor my peeling nose, back, and shoulders. Best uses for this playlist: late, warm nights sitting around with people you have just met; hot days when your beer is warm before you take your second sip; or, my personal favorite, on a sunset sailing trip around Mission Bay, either with friends, or a significant other.

Youth Lagoon- July
Summer Heart- Please Stay
Washed Out- Eyes Be Closed
Blue Hawaii- Blue Gowns
Beat Connection- Sunburn
Hotel Mexico- Dear Les Friends
Beach Fossils- Twelve Roses

And finally, my favorite summer song of all-time

Seapony- Blue Star mp3

Am I dead? No. Do I have a crippling amount of work to do in these last three weeks of my college career at PLNU? Yes. I also have a tasty little nugget of music that has kept my eyes on the prize. Summer that is. Seapony sounds like summer break 1975, on a ridiculously sunny day. The music has a nice tennis vibe to it. Check it, love it, support Seapony here.

Genre Spotlight- R&B

R. Kelly is the first thing that comes to mind when R&B is mentioned. Despite multiple prison sentences stemming from questionable personal decisions, I still love the guy's music. His "In the Closet" videos have served me well through long work shifts. R&B, for me at least, is now moving past R. Kelly. The songs I've had stuck in my head recently have had smooth lyrics with decent size beats behind them. This new R&B has moved past Boyz 2 Men, incorporating genres and ideas over the past two decades that have taken the genre in an entirely new direction. Two of my absolute favorite new artists, regardless of genre are Frank Ocean and The Weeknd. They are getting plenty of buzz around the internet, but it is all warranted. These guys are legit. Supposedly Frank Ocean runs around with the guys from Odd Future, and The Weeknd is Drake approved. I don't particularly care about any of that. The music they themselves make is good enough. The Weeknd's grooves about partying make me want to go out and experience something like what they talk about. But instead of going out to clubs and getting bottle service, I'm still going to local dives, at happy hour, because I'm poor. Frank Ocean has something of a distinctly West Coast feel. Way chill songs that throw back to the early days of G-Funk and Nate Dogg (RIP). Overall I would suggest getting, and listening to both these artists immediately. You can get both albums for free, and trust me, they are both worth the less than 100mb the music will take up on your computer.

Hodgy Beats "Mystery" mp3

Odd Future is my guilty pleasure. I try not to listen to anything too negative, but the fact of the matter is their music is too good not to listen to. And it has a kind of over-the-top negativity that makes it alright. This song is pretty tame by OFWGKTA, and the sample of a Moody Blues is just epic. Can't stop playing this song loudly right now.

Artist you've probably never heard of, but should have: Sun Glitters

So here's the run down on Sun Glitters:
This dude from Luxembourg named Victor Ferreira has been making music since 1998. He was using the name Sug(r)cane. So the artist formally known as Sug(r)cane is now known as Sun Glitters. On his bandcamp page, Victor describes his music "Sun Glitters sound is an ocean of lush melodies, pitch-shifted vocal samples, ghostly digi-diva choirs, warm bass melodies driven by alternately dense and relaxing beatwork combinations between downtempo and wonky beats." These words describe his music much more eloquently then I could. They are also words of truth. On a recent music binge, my roommate pulled out one of my favorite recent made-up genres "post dub-step" to describe Sun Glitters. Pretty spot on I would say, but I don't think post-dubstep fully encompasses the reverb-soaked vocals that help define Sun Glitters. Victor does sound quite similar to a pre-major-label release James Blake, with squeaky little kid vocals, I would add another genre to the mix to account for some of the more grown-up sounding vocals in Sun Glitters. So I'm creating post-dubstep-gaze, whatever this even means I'll let you decide, and by you I mean no one, since no one reads this blog. And now that I have joined the masses in creating my own genre, I will leave you with a link to Sun Glitters Bandcamp and some sampling tracks from Sun Glitters most recent release "everything could be fine", and by most recent I mean in a very relative way, as there are three releases on Sun Glitters' bandcamp that were all released in March of this year, so like right now. Enjoy, and hopefully support Victor by buying his album off his bandcamp.

Pat Jordache "phantom limb" video

I'm in complete disarray after listening to this song/watching this video. I feel like Pat Jordache made this song/video when he was snowed in at a cabin for an entire winter. Cabin Fever began, but instead of attacking his family with an axe ala Jack Nicholson he made this way trippy song/video. I'm really digging this song/video, and I refer to them inseparably because they work so perfectly together. Watch the video, trip out on it, then head over to Constellation Records and buy Pat Jordache's latest release here if you so desire.

Star Slinger x Whitney Houston mp3

This is truly a great mash-up of two great songs. It's done by someone named Moranis. The only thing I can dig up is his/her/their youtube page, which only includes this song. Great track, I plan on following this mysterious Moranis in the future.

Star Slinger vs Whitney Houston – How Will I Copulate (Moranis Mashup)

Bibio: Mind Bokeh Sneak Peak "Anything New" mp3

I find the music Bibio makes quite exceptional. Ambivalence Avenue was released in '09. It was part of my heavy rotation during my Fall semester in Melbourne. Lovers' Carvings in particular kept me going through the long Australian summer. Bibio's new album comes out this week, and "Anything New" is getting me quite excited for its release. Having a real retro vibe is definitely the current trend, and Bibio really excels in this area. Order the new record, Mind Bokeh here, on a sweet double LP.

New Cults Groove

Great new track from Cults upcoming full-length debut. Spoiler Alert* I have a major band crush on Cults. Despite only releasing a handful of songs, along with a 7", they have several excellent songs. They manage to channel so many different influences in their sound. If you so desire you can join me in pre-ordering their upcoming album (which will include "You Know What I Mean") here.

Gunnar Bjerk

In fitting with my recent eighties nostalgic obsession, here's this chill new track from Gunnar Bjerk. First music I've heard form Bjerk, but supposedly he's originally from Arizona, but landed in New York a couple years back with hopes of becoming a studio engineer. Then he ended up making a couple tracks. Thank goodness he did because this one sounds great. Pick up a 500 limited 10" pressings of "Back Then" at the DFA Website.

Summer Camp- I Want You

PS, I saw Summer Camp over my spring break at the Echo. I'm pretty sure the sound guy had never actually heard any of Summer Camp's music before, so the beginning of the set was quite forgettable, but they closed with this, their new track, and completely blew me away.

Arches- Headlights mp3

Absolutely gorgeous piece from Arches. The little guitar piece is my favorite part of this song. Not to call out the singing, but I feel like most of the songs emotion comes from the guitar, which says more for the guitar then then anything, because the singing is still quite emotional. The guitars are just so darn yearning.

My Two Favorite Music Videos Of All-Time

Now I'm just on a roll with music videos. Thought I'd share two of my favorites I've seen in recent history

So insanely good. After you watch, you don't even remember what the song sounded like because you were so enthralled with the video

Blouse "Into Black" mp3

This song really gave me chills. The little chorus Blouse throws in just makes me melt. Its even better when watching the music video with a couple doing a completely primal dance with fireworks going off. Fireworks are one of my favorite things. They are completely pointless and overpriced, but watching them on the Fourth of July each year is my favorite, most reflexive time of the year. That is how this song makes me feel.
